China Passport, Driving License & ID: Your Guide to Mobility in China
Navigating identification and travel in China involves understanding its key documents for citizens and foreign residents. China’s system for passports, driving licenses, and ID cards is designed for national security and administrative efficiency.

The Chinese passport provides international travel access, though its visa-free travel reach is more limited compared to some other major nations. For citizens, passports are issued by public security organs and have a validity of 5 or 10 years depending on age.

For residents, the Resident Identity Card (RIC) is the mandatory national ID card for Chinese citizens, used for almost all daily activities and services. Foreign residents in China obtain a Foreign Permanent Resident ID Card (formerly Green Card), which serves a similar purpose. Both typically include personal data, a photo, and a unique identification number.

Driving in mainland China requires a Chinese driving license; international driving permits are not recognized. Foreigners with a valid residence permit can apply for a permanent license, which typically involves a written theory test on Chinese traffic regulations and sometimes a practical driving test. Short-term visitors may obtain a temporary driving permit.

While online application for some visa types is available, the process often still requires in-person submission of documents at Chinese embassies or consulates.
